The pivotal moment in history

What event would you consider to be the most pivotal moment in human history? Perhaps it was when we stepped on the moon, or learned to fly?

These feats demonstrate the height of human imagination. Yet, even with such lofty achievements, in all our intellect, we still cannot overcome our greatest enemy. Death.

How futile progress is in light of the reality of death. To what purpose is our lives if it is marked by the inevitability of it’s end?

Herein lies a dilemma, we were created to subdue and have dominion over creation. Yet, we are also confined to the fate of death.

For we are not at war with death itself, but rather with God’s Word that proclaimed death to be the punishment for our sin. Undoubtedly, no human will could thwart the will of God. For with man it was impossible to defeat death, but with God all things were possible.

Who else could defeat death, other than Life Himself? Who could simultaneously fulfil God’s declaration to subdue and have dominion, and to experience death, except the Eternal Word? For even Jesus could not escape the sting of death, for He could not act against His own Word. Yet, though He experienced death, it was impossible for death to hold Him. The death of Christ commenced humanity’s dominion of it, for resurrection had now been made possible.

We find, therefore, the most pivotal moment in history at the resurrection of Christ. For Christ did not simply take humanity forward, He took humanity beyond. That at His resurrection, humanity’s purpose and God’s Word were simultaneously fulfilled in one moment in history. Paving the way for all of humanity to subdue death, to the point where we can be confident that our death will simply be the glorious moment where we finally meet God, face to face.
